Kenusa Medical Limited is a Kenya-based social enterprise, we build and operate dialysis centers in partnership with Mission Hospitals, with the goal of improving the quality of life for kidney patients by helping to increase access and improve the standard of renal care in East Africa. Â
The Kenyan Ministry of Health estimates that one million Kenyans suffer from kidney- related diseases; the WHO estimates that 1 in 5 men, and 1 in 4 women in Kenya, between the ages of 65 and 74 have chronic kidney disease. Although most level 5 hospitals in Kenya have the ability to perform renal replacement therapy, in many regions in Kenya there is still limited access to safe dialysis treatment.
OUR MODELS
The high prevalence of kidney diseases and limited treatment options means that patients must travel great distances to receive treatment. Our model is to partner with Mission Hospitals and other faith-based institutions to bring quality dialysis and kidney care to underserved and rural communities with a focus on sustainability and long-term impact.

Private services are necessary because African hospitals rarely generate profits from dialysis due to operational challenges. Setting up and operating a dialysis unit is capital intensive. The infrastructure required for dialysis, such as power backup, water treatment and delivery systems are costly to install and requires technical expertise to maintain. Dialysis machines may break down, equipment needs frequent disinfection, hiring qualified staff is expensive, and managing the supply chain is crucial to ensure a steady availability of consumables for patient treatment.

We offer our partner hospitals 2 different models depending on their specific needs.
Comprehensive Model
For hospitals with limited resources to invest in a dialysis unit, our Comprehensive Model is ideal. Partner organizations provide space, electricity, and water, while we handle all operational aspects and share the NHIF revenue. We operate the dialysis unit as a contract service provider for 5-7 years, covering everything from building and equipping the unit to servicing machines, managing billing, and overseeing day-to-day clinical operations and patient care.
This collaborative partnership includes an equitable revenue-sharing model, allowing hospitals to benefit from dialysis services without the complexities of managing the unit. Most kidney patients in Kenya rely on the NHIF, which covers 100% of the cost for two dialysis sessions per week, ensuring profitability and sustainability for our partner organizations.
Adaptive Model
Our Adaptive Model empowers hospitals in East Africa to independently operate dialysis units. We offer consultative services for hospitals ready to invest in their own infrastructure, assisting with design, purchase, and installation of water and electrical systems to international standards. We provide end-to-end support, from setting up dialysis centers to training staff and acquiring necessary accreditations.
Kenusa is paid per project, allowing hospitals to keep NHIF dialysis revenue and gain operational experience, ensuring long-term sustainability. We also help source financing for water treatment systems, lease and maintain dialysis machines, and supply consumables at competitive prices. Partner hospitals can customize the assistance they need, maintaining more control over their dialysis operations.
We have successfully launched our first center in partnership with Fatima Mission Hospital in Ongata Rongai, Kenya, and currently operate the largest dialysis unit in Kajaido County.  Our sustainable and scalable model is ideal for expanding into other underserved regions, bringing about lasting change in rural East Africa.  Our ultimate goal is to create a strong network of partner hospitals and institutions to improve access to life-saving dialysis and kidney care, enhancing the quality of life for patients and their families.
